The outfit of the CHP patrollers (reference 2002)

The outfit has evolved over time, but the current version is only very close to that of the 2000s.

CHP uniforms are traditionally khaki with the four-bump hat. There is a band on the pants which is blue and gold. Ceremonial dress includes a green jacket and blue tie (motorcycle officers wear a bow tie). There are also uniforms for aircraft pilots, bad weather and cold.

Patrol vehicles are, by state law, painted black, doors and roof white, with a replica CHP badge on the sides and the words HIGHWAY PATROL on the back.

The outfit of the CHP patrollers ("Officers") varies according to the seasons.

The "summer" one is composed of the following different elements:

Khaki shirt with 2 pockets with CHP crests on each arm Khaki pants with double blue stripe Bronze plate with the name of the patrolman CHP badge (star) with the number Decorations (sniper, first aider, seniority at the CHP, etc.) Belt carrying the holster, radio, handcuffs, chargers and other accessories Black high-top motorcycle boots Helmet in three colors (black, blue and gold) with the symbol patrollers (currently the helmet is a SHOEI RJ Platinium Police Motorcycle, not imported into Europe, embellished with a gold band and 2 gold "P" buttons) Black or beige motorcycle gloves

    A leather jacket

HELMET

Currently the CHP's helmet is a SHOEI RJ PLATINUM POLICE MOTORCYCLE HELMET - Style # HH-04-1 - Black/White Hi-Rise and Gold band and "P" Button . Unfortunately, after taking my information from SHOEI Europe Distribution (distributor of the SHOEI brand in France), I obtained the following information: “Unfortunately this model is not available in Europe.

On this observation, I looked for a helmet close to the original, homologated in France and I left it in the hands of Erwan (RBT Créations, Cf. motorcycle paint and links). My choice fell on the BELFAST LUXE BLACK Scorpion Helmet Head size: XL / Color: Matt black, because it is possible to add a BELFAST Scorpion jet helmet cap. This fiberglass helmet can be painted and is homologated (thus guaranteeing my safety). And I found the chocolate-colored leather interior more visually pleasing than the black of the original helmet.

Purchased through ixtem-moto.com, helmet cap available and excellent customer service.

Then, passage at Erwan for paint and varnish.

Addition of a SENA bluetooth kit bought at the Beep bike 44 store, where it's always a pleasure to go for the choice and advice.

Finally, addition of the golden border and the "P" buttons (mounted on the cap so as not to alter the properties of the helmet), the set imported from the USA purchased on Ebay:

* Shoei GOLD 'P' POLICE Buttons w/Posts RJ Platinum Helmet - Law Enforcement

* Shoei RJ Platinum-LE Helmet Hardware - Rank Buttons/Bands - Law Enforcement [Deluxe Rank Band - Gold]

I let you judge the final result with regard to the constraints encountered.

  • Individual arming

A Smith & Wesson 4006 which will be replaced from 2017 by an S&W MP40 pistol (caliber .40).

The S&W 4006 features a stainless steel frame and slide, double-action/single-action handgun with 4-inch barrel, slide-mounted decocker/safety, and 11-round staggered column magazine.

It was one of the new 3rd generation S&W semi-autos, designed with input from famed gunsmith Wayne Novak of Parkersburg, WV. The 4006 featured the new .40 S&W cartridge and featured a wrap-around one-piece Xenoy grip compared to the previous standard 2-piece grip panels, as well as low-profile Novak 3-dot sights. A lightweight S&W 4003/4043 aluminum alloy was produced, weighing 800 grams (29 oz) and more comfortable to carry. The Model 4046 was a stainless steel DAO (double action only) pistol.

The first 2 digits of the model number indicate the caliber. The last digit, a 3 or a 6, indicates an aluminum or stainless steel frame respectively. Various safety features include a safety lever (which blocks the hammer firing pin) as well as a magazine safety (which prevents the pistol from firing when no magazine is inserted).

Although a true double-action pistol, the firearm shares this magazine disconnect feature with Browning Hi-Power pistols: it cannot be fired without the magazine in place. This feature was developed to meet the needs of various law enforcement agencies interested in providing another level of security to their agents.

    My individual armament

First, a legal reminder: In FRANCE, article 132-75 of the penal code specifies:

“Is likened to a weapon any object which, presenting […] a resemblance likely to create confusion, is used to threaten to kill or injure or is intended, by the person carrying it, to threaten to kill or injure.”

In addition, in some French departments, carrying dummy weapons may be prohibited on public transport and other public places. The penalty incurred is a fine which varies between 11 and 35 euros.

Finally, I would like to specify that for security reasons (even a dummy weapon visually remains a weapon), I would not carry this reproduction on the public highway.

To visually simulate the S&W 4006 for photos and films in private places, I opted for a KWC airsoft reproduction of an S&W M4505. Visually quite close, it also had to fit in the holster.

    Shirt, badges and honors

The insignia of the California Highway Patrol is a seven-pointed gold star with the California state seal in the center and a ribbon with the rank. The points of the stars have as engraving, oak leaves. The 7 branches represent:

Character: the mental strength of officers, their physical toughness and stability; Integrity: not being corrupt police officers; Knowledge: knowing about reprehensible situations and the laws, as well as remaining aware of what is expected of them and showing understanding with people; Judgment: the ability to apply the right sanctions against people who commit misdemeanors or crimes; : being faithful to the rules of the patrol and to their teammates;Courtesy: respecting the law and the hierarchy but also respecting individuals.
